The humble town of Bukit Mertajam, beyond the iconic Penang Bridge and island’s skyline is a nostalgic home to Datuk Wira Lee Chong Wei, one of Malaysian’s famous sports figure.
While he showed us his intimate life and career inspiration in the Lee Chong Wei movie, we share Datuk Wira’s favourite food and spots in Bukit Mertajam. A close friend and former world number 1 badminton player, Chew Choon Eng, spills some of the memorable local food that they both enjoyed after their youthful workouts and training.

Kuay Chap – Tua Pek Kong Cheng
Kuay Chap noodles served in triangle pieces in a bowl of salty gravy together with duck and pork meat.

The bowl of aromatic yam rice is served with pork broth and braised pork in soy sauce as side dishes.
Hokkien Mee – Cheok Sah Food Court
If you have watched Lee Chong Wei movie, you would know that he loves Penang hokkien mee. Hokkien mee is a bowl of soup noodles made with prawn broth. The ultimate taste lies in the sweet and hot chilli paste that you mix in the soup.
Duck Egg Fried Kueh Teow – Mei Le Hwa Restaurant
Replacing chicken egg with duck egg in Penang famous char kueh teow adds a tang of saltiness and and taste to the aromatic noodles.
